Prepaid-card scams in India: how to spot & report them

Prepaid-card queries in India include real scam intent — "buy discounted gift cards", "cash out wallet", "no-KYC high-limit cards". This standing page is our policy and your shield. We will never facilitate grey-market gift-card trading.

The scams we see most

  • Fake reload sites — pages that look like your issuer and steal card details or KYC documents. Always type the issuer's URL yourself.
  • Gift-card mule schemes — "buy ₹5,000 gift card for ₹4,000" or "sell me your gift card balance". You become part of a laundering chain.
  • Cash-out wallet offers — "convert wallet balance to cash" services. Cash-out of PPIs is restricted by RBI; anyone promising it is scamming you.
  • No-KYC high-limit cards — a card that promises no KYC with high limits doesn't exist under RBI rules. It's a phishing or data-harvesting trap.
  • Phishing calls & OTP fraud — "your card is blocked, share the OTP". Legitimate issuers never ask for OTPs or full card details by phone.

Our policy: we do not list unofficial reload sellers, do not host checkout, and do not collect KYC documents. If a page on this site ever links to an issuer, it is the issuer's official site.

How to protect yourself

  1. Only use official channels. Apply, load and manage cards on the issuer's own app or website.
  2. Never share OTPs or CVV. No legitimate bank or issuer will ever ask for these.
  3. Freeze instantly. If you suspect fraud, freeze the card in-app and call the issuer's helpline.
  4. Keep a paper trail. Screenshots, complaint IDs and transaction references for every interaction.
  5. Report it. Issuer → RBI Ombudsman → cybercrime portal. See below.

Where to report

Your issuer

First stop — the issuer's customer care and grievance desk. Keep the complaint number.

RBI Ombudsman

Escalate unresolved complaints to the RBI Ombudsman for Digital Payments via cms.rbi.org.in.

Cybercrime portal

For financial fraud, file on the national cybercrime reporting portal and follow up with local police.

If you've already lost money: act fast — freeze the card, inform the issuer, and file a cyber complaint within the first hours. Time matters for recovery.

Safety FAQs

Only from the official issuer or an authorised retailer running a legitimate promotion. Unofficial "discounted" gift cards are a hallmark of laundering and mule schemes — avoid them entirely.

Cash withdrawal from PPIs is restricted by RBI (Full-KYC PPIs allow limited ATM access; small/gift/transit PPIs do not). Anyone offering to "cash out" your balance for a fee is running a scam.

Immediately freeze the card, call the issuer's fraud helpline, and file a cybercrime complaint. Do not wait — every minute matters.
